Electronic Arts has announced two major pieces of news this past week. On the one hand, EA Sports is bringing back Fight Night 15 years after its last installment, Fight Night Champion. However, another piece of news has cast a shadow over the company’s decision. The closure of BioWare has shocked the gaming community due to its significance and consequences.

The Closure of BioWare, the Cancellation of Mass Effect, and the Mass Layoffs
Electronic Arts has confirmed the closure of BioWare, one of the most influential studios in the video game industry. The developer of such iconic games as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and the first two titles of Baldur’s Gate is shutting down, canceling future projects, and laying off 400 employees.
With this closure, EA plans to cut 3% of its total workforce. The video game publisher confirmed that its new direction will focus on fewer large-scale action-adventure games. Meanwhile, development of Marvel’s Iron Man and Star Wars Jedi continues.
This decision comes following the acquisition of EA by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. A deal that closed this past August.
Mass Effect Cancellation and the state of other Video Games
With the closure of BioWare, the cancellation of the new Mass Effect, which was in its early stages, has also been confirmed. In a letter shared publicly by David Tinson (EA’s chief operating officer) and Cam Weber (studio head), they state that following a business review, they have decided to cancel certain projects. In addition to the loud cancellation of the new Mass Effect project, it has been reported that Project Lotus. The codename for a new game in The Sims series, has also been canceled.

What will happen to BioWare Games After the Studio Closes?
When a video game studio closes, the games it has already released do not automatically disappear. Existing titles can remain available for purchase and download because the rights to these games belong to the publisher, not only to the developer studio. For example, in the case of Dragon Age, Electronic Arts owns the franchise and can continue distributing its games after the studio closes.
However, the closure could affect the long-term support of these games. Future patches, technical fixes and downloadable content may be reduced or discontinued. Those games tat rely on online servers or account-based services could be more vulnerable than titles that can be played entirely offline.
Ultimately, the future of BioWare’s released games will depend on Electronic Arts and its decisions about distribution, maintenance and licensing. While the studio closure marks the end of an important chapter in gaming history, its existing games can continue to be enjoyed by current and future players.
For players that have already purchased BioWare games: there is no reason to assume that their entire collection will suddenly disappear. Digital purchases may remain accessible through platforms, although continued access can depend on the platform, licence agreements and online requirements.

Fight Night is Back: EA Sports Revives it after 15 Years
EA Sports is bringing back Fight Night, ending a 15-year hiatus for its boxing franchise. The announcement was made on the 20th of October via the official EA Sports account on X. The franchise ‘s comeback has been discussed on several occasions over the past decade. Previous plans failed to materialise, with the latest reported attempt being shelved around a year ago.
During the franchise’s absence, other titles have tried to fill the gap, such as, Undisputed. However, the boxing game has struggled to meet all expectations, leaving a potential return by EA Sports.
For now, Ea Sports has not revealed the platforms, development studio or release window for the next Fight Night. Further details will be needed to establish how the franchise will return and whether it will meet the expectations of boxing fans who have waited more than a decade for a new title.
Every Game in the Series
Fight Night 2004

Fight Night 2004 is the first game of the series developed by EA Sports, which succeeded EA’s Knockout Kings franchise. The game introduced a career mode, realistic boxing mechanics and Total Punch control. These features became defining elements of the series and were further refined in future titles.
Fight Night Round 2

Fight Night Round 2 was the only title in the series to appear on the Game Cube. That version also included the original SNES game Super Punch-Out! and its protagonist as an unlockable character. This title introduced the EA Sports Haymaker, a powerful punch that can inflict significant damage and potentially knock down an opponent instantly. However, missing or having the attack blocked or parried can leave a boxer vulnerable or drain valuable stamina, adding another layer of strategy to each fight.
Fight Night Round 3

Fight Night Round 3 introduced significant graphical and gameplay improvements, including the new Impact Punches Mechanic, ESPN Classic fights and an expanded career mode in which players could build their reputation, secure sponsorships and earn appearances on ESPN. One of the game’s most notable changes was the removal of the traditional heads-up display by default, encouraging players to judge their boxes’ stamina and condition through their movements, stance and facial expressions.
Fight Night Round 4

Fight Night Round 4 was released with boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson as its cover stars. It includes a roster of 48 licensed boxers and introduces several new features and models, including Legacy Mode. This allows players to develop a boxer’s career and work towards becoming a champion.
Fight Night Champion

Fight Night Champion introduced a story-driven mode inspired by classic boxing films, following middleweight contender Andre Bishop as he navigates the challenges of rising through the ranks of professional boxing. The game refined the series’ combat system with full Spectrum Punch Control, allowing players to throw a wider variety of punches with greater precision. Its Legacy Mode enables players to begin their careers in amateur boxing before progressing to the professional ranks.
