In The White Castle every movement, decision and turn counts. With only nine turns per player, victory depends on how efficiently you play every decision and in what you spend every resource. Here are three strategies to help you play more efficiently, make smarter choices, and increase your chances to win.

🇪🇺 Eurogame
The White Castle is a strategic Euro-style board game set in feudal Japan during the Sengoku period. The game places players in the role of different clan leaders seeking to increase their influence at Himeji Castle. The residence of the powerful daimyo Sakai Tadakatsu. Players must balance short-term gains with longer-term plans, deciding when to develop their clan members, collect resources, and pursue scoring opportunities.
The game includes a central board and four personal domain boards. The central board features three bridges where players select the dice to determine their actions. Their values influence coin gains and costs. Meanwhile, personal Domain boards track clan development and resources.
The base game lasts three rounds, with three turns per player during each round. A total of nine turns per player. At the end of the third round, players calculate their clan Points from the Positions of their workers, their garden cards, Warriors and couriers, and other scoring elements. The player with the most points wins.
The White Castle Board Game Mechanics
- Worker placement: Players deploy three types of clan members: Gardeners, warriors, and Courtiers. Each token has a distinct role. Placing workers requires specific resources and can unlock actions, bonuses, and scoring benefits.
- Dice drafting/Replacement: Dice drafting and placement determine which actions platters can perform. At the beginning of each round, players roll the dice and arrange them by colour and value on three bridges. During their turn, each player selects a die from an available end of a bridge and places it on a compatible action space. The actions available are determined by the die’s colour.
- Dice Rolling: Introduces variability into each round. Although players choose which available dice to take, they cannot fully control the results rolled at the start of the round.
- Resource Management: Players collect and spend Food, Iron, Mother-of-pearl, and coins to deploy workers, advance Courtiers, and activate actions. Each resource serves a different purpose.
- Variable turn order: Turn order can change between rounds based on the players’ positions on the Passage of Time track. Advancing along this track can affect when players act in subsequent rounds.

Three Winning Strategies At The White Castle
Winning at The White Castle is more than simply placing workers and collecting resources. Here are three winning strategies to help you build a stronger game, use your resources efficiently, and make every turn count.
Build The Lantern Engine Early
In The White Castle, building your lantern engine early is a strategy focused on maximising the benefits you receive from your actions throughout the game. This area is important because it connects your actions to bonuses and progression on your personal player board. Rather than focusing exclusively on immediate points, you’ll want to invest in actions that improve your ability to generate resources, unlock benefits, and create stronger combinations during the remaining rounds.
One way to achieve this strategy is to prioritise moving Courtiers into the Castle when the opportunity is favourable. Advancing Courtiers through the Castle’s levels can help you improve your personal action card and unlock additional Lantern-related benefits. The earlier you establish this progression, the more opportunities you have to benefit from it before the final scoring.
Look for opportunities to combine Castle progression with resource generation or other useful bonuses so that each action contributes to more than one objective. The goal is to make early actions work for you more than one. The strongest approach is not necessarily to maximise the Lantern engine at all costs, but to develop it efficiently while keeping your final scoring objectives in sight.

Chain Actions Instead Of Single Benefits
One of the most effective ways to improve your score in The White Castle is to look for opportunities to chain actions together rather than choosing moves that provide only one immediate benefit. With only nine turns in a game, every action matters. A move that gives you a resource is useful. However, a move that gives you a resource, helps you advance a worker, and unlocks another bonus can be even more valuable. Pay close attention to the interactions between the different areas of the board game and your personal game board. placing Gardeners in the gardens, Warrior in the training grounds, and Courtiers in the castle can provide different rewards.
Panning ahead is essential for creating these action chains. Before taking a die or placing a worker, consider what the move will allow you to do in the following turns. By combining resource generation, worker placement, bonuses and scoring opportunities, you can extract more value from your limited actions.

Choose Dice For Their Total Value, Not Just Their Number
In The White Castle, choosing the right die involves much more than simply picking the highest or lowest number available. Each die determines the cost of a placement and influences the resources you gain or spend. A high-value die may seem attractive at first because it can activate powerful action, but it can also require you to pay coins. On the other hand, a low-value die may generate income or let you carry out a useful action at a lower cost. The key to this strategy is to assess the overall benefit of each die, rather than focusing on its number alone.
One of the most important considerations is how the die’s value compares with the value of the action space on the board. This difference determines whether you gain coins or have to pay them. Spending coins can be worthwhile if the placement helps you advance your workers, collect resources, or improve your scoring position.
The best die is the one that delivers the greatest overall strategic benefit, not necessarily the one with the highest number. By managing your dice and finances carefully, you can make more efficient decisions and get the most out of your nine turns.
