Steam Machine is finally here and there have been numerous opinions on the new console/pc during the last few days. From tech professionals reviewing the hardware and design, to users’ opinions on availability and pricing.

Steam Machine ensures gamers access to the full Steam ecosystem, including their existing game library, mods, and cloud saves. A hybrid approach between console and PC, rather than choosing between them.

Steam Machine, Console Or A New Form Of PC?

Not just a console, but a compact PC with SteamOs, designed to offer a gaming experience within a PC ecosystem. Valve describes it as a compact gaming PC that delivers a console-like experience. Adding that it should not be viewed as a direct competitor to PlayStation not Xbox.

Specifications And Technical Data

After its release and several technical reviews, Tech professionals have concluded that the new Steam Machine is even less power-efficient than the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles. Although it stands up for its GabeCube design, compact and with an interchangeable modular casing, its insides and performance is what dominates all reviews.

  • Reviews carried out by various professionals and influencers in the technology and gaming sectors agree that the processor is a semi-custom chip offering solid gaming performance. Based on Zen 4, it is capable of reaching 4.8 GHz with a TDP of 30W. This is sufficient for high resolutions, where the CPU has less of an impact.
  • Another conclusion that seems to be widely accepted is that the major weakness of this new console is its GPU. The Steam Machine uses an RDNA 3-based graphics processor, with 28 compute units and 8 GB of VRAM. This hardware was already considered mid-range back in 2023, that’s three years ago.

These specifications ensure a solid gaming experience at 1080p, with a few adjustments to graphics for more demanding titles. The experience in 4K is sidelined for those less demanding game titles. As a comparison, other consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X can successfully maintain stable high-resolution with fewer manual adjustments.

After these early reviews and testing, Valve has changed the characteristics of the Steam Machine on the official Steam shop. Where previously said that the console could run 4K games at 60 FPS, now reads: “Enjoy games at a resolution of up to 4K”. This change in description appeared after the publication of the console reviews. The compatibility with FSR4 is not available from its release, but it will be added later.

Expectations Vs. Reality of Steam Machine

console analysis G.O.

Steam Machine exceeds in design and efficiency during intense charges. All you have to do to set it up is plug it in, set some details and log in your steam account. From there you’ll be seeing your steam library on the screen or TV. Its user-friendly and easy-to-use or learn interface is one of the best traits of the machine.

However, game performance has yet to receive some enhancements that will provide a more substantial performance boost. Until then, 1080p at 60 FPS is likely to remain the optimal balance between visual quality and smooth gameplay for most of the demanding titles in the Steam catalogue.

Let’s Talk Games: Adaptation And Catalogue Presence

According to an interview with Valve’s developers by Automation Media: To earn the Steam Machine Verified badge, games must run at 1080p and maintain at least 30FPS using the default settings, ensuring smooth, hassle-free experience right out of the box without requiring players to adjust any graphics options. This certification is designed to give gamers and users confidence that a game will perform as expected.

Valve also emphasised the flexibility of the steam ecosystem. Players can stream their games across a wide range of compatible devices, thanks to Stream Link and Remote Play. This allows players to choose the hardware that best suits their needs while maintaining access to the same Steam library across multiple devices.

Valve Wanted A Different Price For The Steam Machine

During the preorder period for the new Steam Machine, the compact gaming PC running SteamOS the device started at €1,039. This base price referred to the 512GB model and did not include the Steam controller. The prices including the controller were raised to €1,108. The model with 2TB capacity is priced at €1,359 without the controller and €1,428 with it. This significant raise in console price has also sparked some controversy. As it may be the start of a new generation of consoles, including other projects like XBox Helix, with significantly higher prices compared to past releases.

In recent conversations with Digital Foundry Valve Engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said that the company had no intention of keeping the Steam Machine expensive. He explained that the goal of this new console is to strengthen the connection between players and games. He also added that Valve has no intention to sell the hardware for any other purposes. Valve believes that a lower price would ultimately benefit both players and Valve.

Is the price going to lower in the near future, then? Valve Engineer Yazan Aldehayyat cautioned that a price reduction is unlikely in the near future. He emphasised that Valve would like to make the Steam Machine more affordable for a wider audience. However, they can not promise that such a change in price would happen anytime soon. In the same article it is suggested that the high prices are a direct consequence of the AI bubble that is raising the cost of several components in the PC and console market.

The Rise of Console-Style Gaming PCs

The next generation of gaming hardware appears set to blur the line between PC and console gaming. Devices like Valve’s Steam Machine and Xbox project Helix illustrate this shift by combining the openness of the PC Ecosystem with the simplicity of consoles. As these different ways of play get closer, pricing is becoming one of the biggest questions surrounding this new gen of gaming hardware. Their significantly higher cost, compared to other traditional consoles, could limit their appeal to gamers.
