A Pokémon Nuzlocke is a hard challenge only true Pokémon trainers can win. This challenge has become one of the most popular among players and a new and refreshing way to play the main Pokémon games. Because these games do not have difficulty modes, its community has developed an ingenious way to make them harder to play.
What is a Nuzlocke and is it so Popular
A Nuzlocke is a creative and challenging way to play Pokémon games, created by Pokémon fans. It is essentially the hard mode of a Pokémon game. As previously said, this is not a feature created by the developer, but it is widely recognised within the pokémon community, specially among the more experienced gamers. Many trainers take pride in completing Pokémon games by following Nuzlocke rules, as doing so requires a high level of dedication, strategy, and knowledge of the game series.

What Rules Apply In A Pokémon Nuzlocke

All Pokémon nuzlocke challenge follow three basic rules:
- Any Pokémon that faints must be released or boxed permanently. It is considered dead and unavailable for the rest of the challenge.
- Only the first wild pokémon encountered in a route or area can be caught. If the player fails to catch that Pokémon, they won’t be able to catch another Pokémon in that area.
- The player must nickname all the Pokémon they catch or obtain. This is a universally accepted rule.
In addition, there are also some basic guidelines applicable to the main three rules in a Pokémon Nuzlocke. such as a “Duplicate Clause” that permits the player to skip the first pokémon they see in an area, if they already own that same pokémon. Players can continue battling until they encounter one they do not already own, and attempt to catch it.
There is also the “shiny Clause”, meaning that if the player encounters a shiny wild Pokémon, they may catch it. Even if a wild Pokémon has already been encountered in the same area.
Pokémon Nuzlocke Game Variants

Some of the core rules to Pokémon Nuzlocke may not seem particularly challenging for experienced players. If you are looking for a more challenging experience, there are a number of optional rules that can add more excitement to the challenge.
- Hardcore Nuzlocke: A harder mode of playing this challenge in which your Pokémon can’t exceed the level of the highest.level Pokémon used by the next boss you face. In addition, you may not use items during any of the battles.
- Monotype: All Pokemon on your team must share the same type. For this extra hard mode you may continue battling until you catch or obtain a Pokemon of the same type in an area. To make it extra hard, Discard all the pokemon you encounter that do not match your type and move to another area.
- Unique Type: You may only have one pokemon of each type on your team. For this variant you can also continue fighting in the same area until you find the Pokémon Type that you need on your team. However, to make it extra hard, discard the entire area if you find a Pokémon that does not.
- Poké Ball Nuzlocke: Catch every single Pokémon using a different type of Poké Ball.
- Private Pokémon Centre Nuzlocke: Pokémon Centres come at a cost. in this mode you must keep track of your spending and use the items only once.
- Friendly Rival: For this mode, ignore the first of the basic rules, but only during battles against your rival who has the type advantage from the very beginning.
- Egglocke: Instead of using the Pokémon you catch, you must transfer Pokémon Eggs and use the random Pokémon that hatch from them.
- Giftlocke: You may use only your starter pokémon and other Pokémon you received as gifts.
- Sleeplocke: You must complete the game in a single sitting without going to sleep.
- Single-centre Challenge: You may only use each Pokémon Centre once.
The community keeps creating new extra challenges to their Pokémon Nuzlocke, that is why this may not be the complete list of extra hard modes out there.
Pokémon Nuzlocke Pokémon Go Adaptation

While Pokémon Nuzlockes are traditionally associated with the main Pokémon games, some players have also adapted this concept for Pokemon GO. The rules are also community-created and can vary from player to player. The goal of the challenge remains the same, however, to make the game challenging by adding restrictions and consequences.
These are some of the common Nuzlocke rules in Pokémon GO:
- You may only catch the first Pokémon you encounter in a new area, route or PokéShop Cluster.
- If a Pokémon faints in a Gym battle, Raid, Team GO Rocket battle, or PvP match, you must transfer it.
- Like in the Classic Nuzlocke, you must nickname all of your Pokémon.
- You may not trade for Pokémon to replace those you have lost.
- You can also, as an optional rule, limit yourself to catching one Pokemon per day.
As Pokémon Go does not have an end goal or a final boss. Most Nuzlockes have adopted the rule to defeat Giovanni in one month, in order to win.
