Pokémon Master Trainer a 1999 Board Game

In this Pokémon board game, your objective is to be the first player to obtain twenty points worth of Pokémon, defeat a Pokémon Master, and become the world’s Greatest Pokémon Trainer. Pókemon Master Trainer was the first Pokémon board game and it was played as the journey of an aspiring Pokémon master, from Pallet Town to the ultimate title of Greatest Trainer.

Once you leave Pallet Town you can only travel in one direction. However, once you reach Cerulean City, you’ll come to a split in the road. Your choice will define your journey as a Pokémon Master.

Pokémon Master trainer presents a combination of mechanics that work together and complete each other. The player uses dice rolling to move across the board. This introduces the luck element into the game, and requires players to manage risk and plan strategies. At the same time, each location of the game represents a different action or opportunity, like drawing cards.

Each “Draw Event Card” location introduces hand management. In these locations, players draw cards and they must carefully choose how and when to play them. In order to maximise its benefits, block opponents or trigger combos.

Three abilities on Pokémon Master Trainer

  • Catch Pókemon: Some of the spaces in the board you can move to contain the “catch’em” phrase on it. Here you’ll place a pokemon chip upside down before starting the game. Once you reach one of these spaces, flip over the pókemon chip. The dice symbols at the bottom of the chip indicate two numbers. To obtain the pokémon you must roll one of those numbers.

💡You can also use a Poké Ball itemcard to help you catch a pokémon. Use it before the roll.

  • Trade Pokémon: You can trade pokemon with another trainer, when you stop in that same trainer’s space. The pokémon trade is only possible if both trainers agree. If the trainer accepts the trade, you can exchange the proper pokémon chips.

❗You cannot trade starter pokémon.

  • Fight in Trainer Battles: You can challenge another pokémon trainer to a battle if you stop at that same trainer’s space. You can also draw a “let’s fight!” card to challenge any trainer you like. Your opponent may accept the challenge or use a Poké Doll card to refuse to battle. Once the battle starts, you select a Pokémon from your team. To attack your opponent’s pokemon, you each roll a die. You can also use attack bonus item cards to strengthen your Pokémon. To resolve the attack follow:

Add Attack Strength + die roll + Attack Bonus Item Card(s) = Battle total

The trainer with the higher battle total wins. In case of a tie, both players roll again.

An Asymmetric Pokémon Board Game

Pokémon master trainer presents an asymmetric gameplay from the start. As every starter Pokémon chip gives different conditions and abilities for each trainer. The six Starter Pokémons are placed face down and mixed. Each trainer should then choose one ans and turn the pokemon chips over for the other players to see.

This asymmetry transforms each playthrough into a different experience. Players must adapt to their starting conditions and anticipate the best strategy to win. The board game raises its replayability and becomes a different puzzle to decode each time it is played.
