Game review

One of the most played cozy games. An open-ended, country-life and role-playing video game. Released in 2016 by Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone. In this farming simulator, the player inherits their grandfather’s old farm. Equipped with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, the player will rebuild and renew the old farm.

Stardew Valley is available on PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and mobile devices (iOS and Android).

A Cozy Game that expands beyond farming

Stardew Valley is much more than a farming simulator. While rebuilding your grandfather’s farm, raising animals and growing crops, the game offers plenty of activities and locations to explore. Caves to mine resources from, battle monsters, fish in different locations, forage for seasonal items, and craft useful machines and tools as you improve your skills.

Stardew Valley is home to more than 30 unique characters, each with their own routines, personalities, stories and secrets. You can spend time with the villagers and complete quests to develop meaningful friendships, discover their storylines, and even find a romantic partner. There are 12 bachelors and bachelorettes available to date, with marriage allowing your chosen partner to move onto your farm and potentially start a family with your character.

An Ambiance That Stays Alive And Vibrant All Year Round

Time is an important part of Stardew Valley’s atmosphere. A full in-game day lasts about 14 real-world minutes, running from 6:00am to 2:00am. This relatively short day makes time management an important part of the game’s experience. During the day you can tend to your crops and animals, visit the village, explore the mines, go fishing, complete errands, or spend time building relationships with the local community.

Villagers follow their own schedules, meaning the places you encounter can change depending on the time of the day, weather, season or if there’s a special event. They move between their homes, workplaces, shops, beaches, forests, and other locations, creating the impression that life in the valley continues whether you are there to see it or not.

Night brings a noticeable change to the pace and atmosphere of the valley. As the sun sets, the colourful surroundings become darker and quieter. But don’t let this scare you, there is a lot to explore during the night. You can still go fishing, explore the caves and visit certain characters. However, if you are not in bed by 2:00 am, your character passes out. The following day begins with reduced energy, and you can also lose up to 1,000 gold.

All Seasons In-Game

The game is divided into four distinct seasons, with each one lasting 28 in-game days. Every season changes the look and feel of the valley while introducing different crops, forageable items, fish and activities. Crops that grow successfully in one season may not survive when the next one arrives, encouraging you to plan ahead and adapt your farm throughout the year.

Every season also brings its own festivals and community events, giving the villagers opportunities to gather and celebrate. These celebrations make seasons feel more than just a visual change, turning the passage of time into something you actively experience.

Share Your Farm In The Multiplayer Mode

Instead of managing your farm alone, multiple players can live on the same farm. The player that creates the world acts as the host and creates the farm, while other players join as farmhands. Everybody shares the farm’s money, land, buildings, animals, and community progress. Players can also attend the festivals together and participate in many of the same activities as they would in single player.

Multiplayer mode also allows players to form relationships with each other. Farmhands can marry another player by obtaining a wedding ring, allowing two players to become spouses. Players can also pursue relationships with the eligible villagers independently.
