From the introduction: The Consortium is a corporate entity that is attempting to establish holdings in the Scythe. They offer many of the benefits of civilization, but at a cost of some freedoms. The players may choose to play the crew of a Consortium ship, or the crew of a free Scythe ship. This game setting is not intended to represent good or evil, heroes or villains.
