Game review
The post-apocalyptic, role-playing game is the fourth main title of the Fallout series. Published in October 2015 by Bethesda Studios, focuses its story on the Sole Survivor. A vault dweller from the pre-war era who was cryonically frozen inside Vault 111.
Fallout 4 is set in the commonwealth, previously mentioned in Fallout 3, in the surrounding area of Boston, Massachusetts.
Rated by long-time fans of the series as one of the best titles in the entire Fallout franchise, and one of the best that has aged well. Highly regarded, among other things, for its combat mechanics. With more dynamic and responsive gunplay. A greater variety of items to be found by the player that are also interactive and can be used throughout the gameplay.
The Fourth Main Title of the Fallout Series
In Fallout 4, the player takes the role of the sole survivor and discovers a world dominated by fear over a mysterious organisation known as the Institute, which has the people of the commonwealth consumed by paranoia. The commonwealth lives under the threat, or so they think, that humanity will be replaced by a race of artificial human-like beings known as the synths.
Along with the videogame playthrough, the player faces ethical questions due to this synth narrative. Such as how far humans should experiment with science, the morality of creating sentient machines, and how this affects humans.
Some story elements are inherited from Fallout 3 and expanded through Fallout 4, such as the elements from The replicated Man mission from Fallout 3.
Fallout 4 is playable on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Rated M for Mature audiences by the ESRB and PEGI 18. Featuring violence, blood and gore, strong language and drug use.
Fallout 4 goes beyond its quest structure and explores early entries of the Fallout saga. Alongside the main storyline, it offers a wide range of side and miscellaneous missions, and a new “radiant” quest system. These last “radiant quests” present the players with randomised objects, characters, and locations. Unlike previous titles of the saga, the game does not end after the third act’s finale. Players can continue exploring the world with new post-story content, affected by the choices made by the player during the main quest.
Mod support
Fallout 4 is the first of the series to feature a native mod support for consoles, revealed during the E3 event in 2015.
The introduction of the mod support across PC and consoles dramatically extended the video game’s lifespan. Players gained access to new quests, weapons, companions, visual overhauls, and settlement-building expansions created by the gaming community.
On Xbox in particular, modders could add entirely new content that felt close to official expansions. This kept the player base active for years after the base video game launch.
This new feature also changed the player’s expectations for future Bethesda titles. Mod Support became a selling point of the whole Fallout 4 experience.

Stats Selection
When starting Fallout 4, the player needs to set up their basic stats that will be improved as the player progresses in the story. Each of the stats has a different purpose and use, and the game gives the player near complete freedom when creating a character and setting their stats. These stats are:
Perception: Defines the environmental awareness of the character, approves weapon accuracy and facilitates stealing actions and picking locks.
Strength: Refers to the character’s physical power. Redefines how much weight the character can carry and the amount of physical damage they can perform.
Endurance: Improves the base health and action points, allowing the player, among other things, to last longer in combat and run for longer.
Charisma: A stat that will improve the characters ability to persuade and win arguments against NPCs.
Intelligence: Simplifies hacking and helps the player gain more experience points.
Agility: Essential to gain more action points. Perfect for sneaking and movement.
Luck: increases the character’s good fortune and helps to guild and use critical hits more often.
Fallout 4 also gives the player a fair amount of freedom with cosmetic choices.
Three Acts of Main Quest
Fallout 4 organises its main storyline in three acts where the main character is fully acted and voiced by both female and male voices.
During the first act, the story follows the sole survivor leaving vault 11 and exploring the Commonwealth. The character’s mission is to search for their kidnapped son while slowly encountering key factions.
In act two, the storyline focuses on uncovering the secrets of the institute, making decisions that affect the future of the Commonwealth and shaping alliances. Finally act three centres on faction conflicts and major battles that determine the outcome for the region.
Moreover, as previously explained, players can continue exploring the Fallout 4 world after completing the main storyline.
Throughout the game story, players will be able to join some of the factions at specific moments in the game. Some of these factions have a level requirement for the player to join, while others are timed during specific periods and acts of the game.
