Ive always enjoyed a good village setting as a respite between dungeons or a place to visit for begining characters or even come from. You could also start a game where pklayers are common folk who luck out and gain wealth and social mobility. The resources here will let you run a typical village or create your own quickly. I have provided several detailed large villages and some simple maps for smaller crossroads and farming settlements. This assumes the area if fairly orderly and not on a dangerous frontier because of the lack of fortifications. But danger is never too far away, just uncommon enough for a peasant to get to work and the market without being eaten by a giant bug.
