Pandemic Legacy: Season 1

Pandemic Legacy: Season 1
Overview
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 is a cooperative board game in which players must work together to fight the spread of deadly diseases around the world. Building on the original Pandemic board game system, it introduces a legacy campaign in which the game evolves over the course of a year.
The campaign covers 12 months and lasts between 12 and 24 games, with two attempts to complete each month’s objectives. Players take on the roles of specialists with different abilities, working together to contain outbreaks, discover cures, and prevent a global pandemic.
Every Decision Matters
What makes Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 stand out is that every decision matters. Unlike a traditional cooperative board game, where every session begins with the same setup, the choices players make can permanently change the board conditions and context.
Victories, defeats, and unexpected events shape future sessions, creating a campaign that feels personal and unpredictable. New rules, objectives, and surprises are introduced as the story progresses, constantly challenging players to adapt their strategies.
Game Tokens and Components
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 includes game tokens and components that are essential to both its strategy and its campaign.
Research Stations: These buildings allow players to discover cures and serve as important strategic locations. Building a research station will often be part of a month’s objective. Their placement can improve movement across the map and help the team respond to outbreaks more efficiently.
Disease Cubes: These tokens represent infections spreading in cities. Players must treat them before they accumulate and trigger outbreaks, which can spread to neighboring cities.
Outbreak Markers: These track the growing severity of the crisis. Too many outbreaks can lead to a problematic location. These force the players to balance immediate threats against long-term objectives.
Legacy Components: As the campaign progresses, new elements, stickers, and permanent changes can alter the board. New rules and base rules can be changed or modified.
All these components and events make the board a living unit inside the game. It evolves following the representation of the crisis. Every disease cube removed and every research station built can be a small victory.
Asymmetric Characters
One of the defining features of Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 is its asymmetric characters. Each player takes on a specialist with unique abilities, encouraging the group to develop strategies around the strengths and weaknesses of its members.
These differences make character selection an important strategic decision. Players must coordinate their abilities, distribute responsibilities, and decide how best to use their limited actions.
As the campaign progresses, characters can also acquire upgrades to their abilities or suffer permanent consequences.
Campaign Progression
As it is a campaign, the game does not treat every session as an isolated experience. Each month has its own objective, and whether the players succeed or fail can influence the challenges they face in subsequent games.
Completing a Month’s Objectives
Completing a month’s objectives allows the campaign to move forward with a sense of progress. Players may earn beneficial upgrades, improve their chances of controlling future outbreaks, and feel that their actions and decisions helped the ultimate objective.
Failing a Month’s Objectives
When the team fails a month’s objective, the campaign does not simply end. Instead, the players must deal with the consequences while preparing for what comes next.
The rules allow a second attempt each month, but if the team fails again, the campaign still moves forward.
This system creates an interesting balance between challenge and narrative progression. Every consequence is carried over. Players must therefore think beyond the immediate objectives and consider the long-term world situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many players can play Pandemic Legacy: Season 1?
The game supports 2–4 players, who work together as a team to fight the spread of diseases. We recommend the maximum of four players to use as many character abilities as possible.
Can a character be eliminated or die?
Yes. Characters can be permanently lost during the campaign. When it happens, the character’s card is permanently destroyed. The player must discard their hand of cards and continue participating in the game using the applicable rules for a civilian.
Can you lose a month and still continue the campaign?
Yes. Players can attempt each month’s objectives twice. Even if they fail both attempts, the campaign continues, and the consequences become part of the ongoing experience.
What makes Pandemic Legacy different from the original Pandemic?
The Legacy system introduces a persistent campaign in which decisions permanently affect the board, characters, cards, and rules. Each session builds on the previous one.
Is Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 replayable?
The game offers substantial variety during the campaign, but permanent changes mean that the same copy is generally designed for one complete campaign. A fresh copy allows players to experience the campaign again with different decisions.
