From the introduction: In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth... then took the rest of eternity off. To maintain the new Creation, a hierarchy of celestial beings was established: angels and archangels, Powers, Virtues, Dominions, Ophanim, Cherubim - and finally the Seraphim, whose task it was to sing constant praise for the Creator, lest insecurity and self-doubt overwhelm the Creation and unweave the carefully-arranged threads of reality. After several eons of "Holy, holy, holy! Hosanna! Hosanna!", though, Creation seemed fairly confident, and everyone involved was getting pretty sick of the whole thing. It was decided by all that the old songs would be retired, and strong new musics brought up to replace them, as was only fit and right. But how to determine which songs were best? How to determine which singers would best perform the Hymns, and which had become redundant? Behold the wisdom of the Creator: there would be a contest. The seraph best able to reflect the glory of Creation would be granted the beautiful, undying flower that grew at the right hand of the Throne - the Rose Amaranth - as well as the honor of remaining in its position. The other seraphim would be demoted to the lower ranks of angels, to do whatever it was that the lower ranks did. (Probably washing other angels' feet, or something.) Because the seraphim possessed endless grace and unreproachable integrity, they would serve not only as competitors but as judges, deciding amongst themselves which seraph would best praise the Creator and His works. They would, of course, do so with the dignity and honesty that characterized a servant of the Most High.
