Fábulas Fantásticas é um jogo de storytelling, isto é, através das imagens contidas nas cartas, os jogadores se unem para contar e criar uma história pra lá de fantástica. O jogo é formado por um baralho de 54 cartas dividido em 3 tipos: Persona, que define o protagonista e os coadjuvantes da cena, Locações, que define o cenário onde a cena ocorre, e Acessórios, itens que trazem o conflito motivador da cena.
