From the introduction: In several of the baronies there are deserted settlements. The inhabitants of nearby hamlets tell of a savage plague that ravaged the villages. Victims slowed down till they nearly stopped, eventually they even stooped eating and breathing. None will go near them now in fear that whatever destroyed the people will spread to them.
