Where The Jack Hack has a theme of deep depravity and survival, Dead London forgoes some of this theme this in favour of a more adventurous and heroic feel; and a more ‘fantastic’ setting. Background Dead London draws heavily on The War of the Worlds novel, penned from the amazing imagination of H.G. Wells. The game is set in the autumn of 1888, around the time of the infamous Jack the Ripper murders, and is named from a chapter in the novel. After The War “With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this city about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter.” It is six months since the first Martian Pod crashed to Earth. As more and more pods landed, the Martians rapidly conquered much of Great Britain and vast swathes of the rest of the world. Unlike in the original story, the invaders do not succumb to a simple contagion to which they have no resistance. Something much worse is about to happen to them, they are about to run into the worst villainy that Victorian Society can throw at them.
