From the Introduction A narrow wedge of flat ground has been dug out of this slope to prepare the construction of a simple but quite sizeable charcoal kiln. Tons of wood have already been piled into the pit and covered partially with earth but still more is stacked just a few feet uphill of the kiln construction site. Only once all the wood is in the kiln it will be finally covered with the earth dug out here and lit on fire to start the days long process to turn the wood into charcoal under constant supervision by the charcoal burners.
