From the Introduction: The uneven ground of the land is covered small fields, separated by equally uneven dirt paths, as far as you can see. Crude hip high wooden fences separate the paths from the fields and simple scarecrows seem to be doing a decent job at keeping hungry birds and other animals away from the mostly ripe cauliflowers dotting the fields in regular intervals.
