Between a Rock and a Hard Place In 1944 the USMC 1st Division was tasked to attack and secure the island fortress of Pelieu. The small island had become such a rabbit warren of honeycombed defenses that the USMC spent weeks grinding away at, taking the division close to complete exhaustion as a combat formation.
