From the introduction: Long ago mankind lived with the gods, in peace and prosperity, on the world of Kobol. Yet all mankind was forced to leave Kobol, and did scatter among the heavens. Thirteen Tribes left Kobol. Twelve of those Tribes stayed together and formed the Twelve Colonies. At least, that’s what the Sacred Scrolls say.
