Game review
Assassin’s creed was the first game of the series published in 2007, developed by Ubisoft Montreal. It was released initially for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, followed by a PC release in 2008. The team’s research into historical periods, locations, and figures helped give the game its distinctive identity and made its combination of action, exploration, and history especially memorable.
The story begins with Desmond and Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad
The popular video game series begins with the story of Desmond Miles, a bartender who is kidnapped by Abstergo Industries and forced to use the Animus. This machine allows people to relive the genetic memories of their ancestors. Through the Animus, Desmond travels back to the life of his ancestor Altaïr ibn-La’Ahad, an assassin living during the Third Crusade in 1191.
Altair begins the story as an arrogant Assassin. After failing a mission to recover a Piece of Eden and breaking the three principles of the Crees, he is demoted by his mentor, Al Mualim. In order to regain his rank, Altaïr must assassinate nine influential figures across Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus. As he completes these missions, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the Knights Templar and discovers that the targets are connected to a much larger plan to control the holy land. Once he confronts the leader of the templars, new information comes to light and Altaïr must continue his mission to locate the other Pieces of Eden around the world.
Back in the modern day, Desmond discovers that Abstergo is actually controlled by the Templars and that they are searching for these artifacts. His experiences in the Animus also cause the bleeding effect, giving him some of Altaïr’s abilities, including Eagle vision.
Gameplay and Missing Mechanics
Assassin’s Creed is a non-linear action-adventure game where the main objective is to complete a series of assassinations assigned by Al Mualim while traveling between Masyaf, Jerusalem, acre and Damascus.
Before each assasination, players must investigate the target by eavesdropping, interrogating suspects, meeting informants and collecting clues. Once enough information has been gathered, Altaïr can plan and carry out the assasination using stealth, his hidden blade, or direct combat.
Stealth is central to the gameplay. Players can blend into crowds, hide, sit on benches or walk with scholars to avoid guards. Altaïr can also climb buildings and use parkour to explore the cities and reach high vantage points. Other missions include hunting templars, collecting flags and rescuing civilians.
A Deep Dive Into History Through A Video Game
The original Assassin’s Creed features several characters based on real historical figures from the Third Crusade. While the game takes creative liberties with their role and relationships, their presence helps create its historically inspired setting.
Some of these historical characters are: Richard I of England, Robert de Sablé, William de Montferrat, Garnier de Naplouse, and Jubair al Hakim.
The game combines these historical figures with fictional characters such as Altaïr, Al Maulim, Malik Al-Sayf, Lucy Stillman and Desmond Miles. This mixture of real history and fiction is one of the defining features of the Assassin’s Creed Series.
