La Revolución Francesa, a finales del siglo XVIII, había supuesto un cambio en la concepción de la estructura de la sociedad y muchos derechos y privilegios tradicionales se estaban poniendo en duda. Estas ideas revolucionarias recorrieron Europa y convirtieron a Francia en un peligro para los gobiernos más tradicionales. La presión de estos gobiernos favoreció la llegada al poder de Napoleón y con él un régimen político bastante opuesto a las ideas liberales de la Revolución Francesa, pero bastante efectivo militarmente para enfrentarse y derrotar a casi todos sus enemigos. Sólo Gran Bretaña parecía resistir los envites de Napoleón y fruto de su juego político, militar y diplomático, España y Portugal se vieron envueltos en una guerra que en su mayor parte se desarrollaría sobre la península. La sociedad española se divide en tras bandos: los absolutistas que creían que Fernando debía seguir gobernando España como hasta entonces, los afrancesados que pensaban que los cambios que provocaría un gobierno francés serían mejores que seguir con el gobierno anterior y los liberales que creían que tanto absolutistas como Napoleón representaban el pasado y que había llegado el momento de hacer nuestra propia Revolución Francesa.
