Resident Evil Requiem is one of those games that has really hyped the gamer community the last few months, and now that we are past its release, initial reactions, and first complete playthroughs, it is time to take a look at what the game actually delivers.

Let’s explore its atmosphere and gameplay systems to its story and connection with the Resident Evil saga.

A continuation of the Resident Evil’s Story and an Honour to its Legacy

The survival horror video game saga continues after the Racoon City Destruction Incident, thirty years after to be exact. It begins when a body is discovered in an abandoned hotel in the Midwest. The latest in a mysterious string of deaths across the United States. Grace Ashcroft has been assigned to the case in the same place her mother was murdered. When a police officer goes missing at the same hotel, veteran agent Leon S. Kennedy is also assigned to the case.

As the both investigations converge, the two protagonists  uncover disturbing signs of a new virus outbreak linked to the Umbrella Corporation and other organisations linked to the experimentation of bio-organic weapons. The story  rapidly spirals into a survival inside the hotel and its surroundings, trying to survive all the infected victims.

The return to Racoon City, a scenario known to the players from Resident Evil 2 (set during the outbreak of the virus in Racoon City), and Resident Evil 3 (ending with the destruction of Racoon city by a missile strike).

New Features in Resident Evil Requiem

The gameplay mechanics in Resident Evil Requiem blend familiar mechanics with several new features and modern improvements.

New Dual Protagonist Balance

Resident Evil Requiem offers a new protagonist balance with two different playstyles. As the story carries one continuous narrative, it switches between them at specific story points. According to the developers, they’ve tried to make Leon and Grace’s playtime about 50/50.

Grace’s character offers a slower and more realistic movement and she focuses on evasion, stealth, and strategic shooting. Early in the game, she can’t carry high-powered guns and has limited combat ability. She carries only light firearms early on. Her health pool is lower, compared to Leon’s, so sprinting and panicking drains energy quickly. As the gamer progresses, she acquires better tools; however, she remains fragile. Grace embodies classic survival-horror tension, bringing this tension to the gamer.

On the other hand, Leon’s abilities  are centred on action, combat and aggressive approach. His movement is faster, sprinting, and allowing him to take more damage during fights. Leon’s arsenal becomes more diverse in Resident Evil Requiem, which gives him  flexibility to handle enemies in different scenarios. Combat mechanics include precise aiming and the ability to tackle multiple enemies at once. Leon’s game play has a fast pacing with multiple enemy encounters, and action filled scenes.

Differences in crafting

As an intelligence analyst, Grace’s crafting system stays true to her character. Instead of buying recipes from a merchant, she collects samples that later processes on a special machine  to identify the sample. Grace has then to solve a puzzle by interacting with molecules until she finds the correct pattern. These collected samples occupy inventory space, so the gamer needs to manage inventory as they navigate the facility.

Successfully solving a puzzle rewards grace with a new crafting recipe, giving  her more tools to handle enemies and manage resources.

Zombies can be used for crafting

There’s a new resource system to collect infected blood. When protagonist Grace Ashcroft kills zombies, they drop blood, which can be collected and used to craft ammunition.

A major difference between Resident Evil Requiem and older titles from the saga, where killing zombies gave no rewards.

It is important to point out that the infected blood must be collected with a syringe and these have a limited space in the inventory. Blood can also be found and collected from other sources like buckets, mop water, or blood-filled baths. If you have no inventory space when you find more blood, any blood left behind gets automatically marked in the map, so you can return to that place and take the blood when you need it.

Talking Zombies

The zombies in Resident Evil Requiem bring a fresh twist to the franchise. These newly transformed zombies still retain traces of who they were before. They can mutter words or talk to each other, as if they were remembering habits, such as conversation. The video game also expands zombie behaviour by showing repetitive human movements or actions. AS if the infection hadn’t erased their previous personality, or at least not completely. The dancing zombie, a woman who spins around until she sees you, is an example. Another

The Evolution of a Franchise

The evolution of the Resident Evil Franchise has been thought reinvention its entire life. Its return to Raccoon City is a reminder to the gamers that they can return to one of their classic locations and add more story to the  game.

The video game story’s focus on long-term effects and legacy adds a deeper emotional layer to the horror. It’s not just about escaping monsters, it’s about confronting the consequences of decades of Biological warfare.  Resident Evil Requiem plays tribute to the franchise while introducing fresh elements that feel true to its roots.
