Overwatch, the free-to-play, team-based action shooter video game has set a new player record after the release of Season 1: Reign of Talon. For the first time in Overwatch history, the video game delivers a fully connected, multi-layered story told across the entire year. Players can follow the story arc with a clear beginning, middle and conclusion, new playable characters and sub roles to the classic roles of the game.
From season 1 to season 6, ten new heroes will be introduced to unfold the story throughout the year. Each of these new characters will play a direct role in shaping the year’s narrative.
Overwatch Season 1: Reign of Talon
Setting a fully connected narrative arc along six seasons is a new shift in the shooter video game. Overwatch had a lore and storyline before the season 1: Reign of Talon release. Its setting narrated a near-future version of Earth in the mid 2070’s. Around thirty years earlier, humanity faced a devastating robot uprising known as the Omnic Crisis. In response, an elite strike force was formed to end the conflict, laying the foundation for an international peacekeeping organisation called overwatch.
The biggest difference in story telling compared to earlier Overwatch content is its connected, season-long narrative structure.
It is important to note that Overwatch lacked a traditional story mode. Blizzard employed a transmedia storytelling strategy to disseminate lore regarding the game’s characters. Releasing comic and animated media such as short films became the strategy to release the video game’s lore and story. These pieces of media were often standalone and not necessarily presented in chronological order or in seasons.
In Reign of Talon, the story is delivered as a continuous narrative across multiple seasons, forming a clear beginning, middle, and resolution. The story telling is structured, more deliberate and unfolds in real time through gameplay updates.
New heroes have arrived!
This first season introduces five new heroes that will play a key role as the story progresses.
Domina
- Tank.
- Photon Magnum as primary fire, with medium range beam and high impact shot.
- Crystal Charge, launches an explosive crystal that sticks on impact, then reactivating the ability to detonate it and deal damage to nearby enemies.
- Barrier array, a segment hard-light barrier that needs to be destroyed segment by segment.
- Sonic Repulsions to push enemies back
- Ultimate-panopticon a fire heard-light barrier that imprisons enemies.
- Passive-reconstruction, restores shields when dealing damage.
Emre
- Damage.
- Synthetic Burst Rifle with three-round burst weapon.
- Take aim, hold to zoom in, tightening accuracy and increasing fall off range.
- Ciber Frag, throws a granade and detonates after bouncing.
- Siphon Blaster, semi-automatic pistol with life standing explosive rounds.
- Ultimate- override Protocol, transforms the character into a living weapon with rapid explosive blasts.
Anran
- Damage.
- Yunque Fans that shoot fiery projectiles.
- Fan the flames, a hot wind blast that amplifies the burning damage.
- Inferno Rush, propels the character forward and damages enemies on impact.
- Ultimate Vermilion Ascent, charges forward and explodes on impact igniting enemies.
- Dancing Blaze that strikes nearby enemies while dodging all damage.
- Ultimate Vermilion revival, revives the character with a fiery explosion.
- Passive-ignition that hits enemies with fire attacks.
Mizuki
- Support.
- Spirit Glaive that throws a spinning blade that can bounce off walls.
- Healing Kasa, throws the character’s hat to heal an ally.
- Katashiro Return, the character leaps forward, leaving behind a paper doll.
- Binding Chain launches a tethering chain that hinders the first enemy hit.
- Ultimate-kekkai Sanctuary, creates a sanctuary that heals allies and absorbs enemy projectiles.
- Passive-Remedy Aura, healing scales with resources generated by dealing damage and healing.
Jetpack Cat
- Support.
- Biotic Pawjectiles, mid-range, projectiles spread and heal allies.
- Lifeline, allows an ally to be towed. Increases movement and heals the ally.
- Frenetic Flight moves quickly in the direction the character is travelling, gaining a sudden burst of speed.
- Purr, pulsing area heal that increases in frequency over time.
- Ultimate-catnapper, dives towards a ground location knocking down enemies.
- Passive-Jetpack.
New Subroles in Tanks, Damage, and Support Heroes
TANK has three new subroles:
- Bruiser: gains movement and speed while at critical health. It also reduces critical damage received.
- Initiator: While airborne, the character gradually restores a small amount of health.
- Stalwart: Reduces strength of knockback effects and decreases the impact of slows.
DAMAGE has now four subroles:
- Sharpshooter: Landing critical hits reduces the cooldown of the movement abilities.
- Flanker: Health packs restore more health.
- Specialist: Reload speed increases when eliminating an enemy.
- Recon: The character deflects enemies below half health through walls after damaging them.
SUPPORT has three new subroles:
- Tactician: The character gains excess ultimate charge.
- Medic: The character gets healed when healing allies with their weapon.
- Survivor: Passive health regeneration activates when using movement ability.
Record-breaking player numbers
After the release of Reign of Talon, Overwatch hit its highest player base on Steam since launch. These numbers predict a renaissance moment for the video game, after years marked by negative reviews and critics.
The shooter videogame reached its peak at approx. 165 000 online gamers. This raise surprised the community and during this event it surpassed other major titles like Call of Duty and Battlefield 6 on gamer numbers on Steam.
A clear sign that this new branding and strategy of a continuing lore and storyline has captivated the gamer’s hearts and interest. With this new season, Blizzard presents new settings and adjustments in playability and new content. They leave behind the name Overwatch 2 as a symbolic gesture, after the community’s dissatisfaction.
