Murder mystery and true crime are captivating the board game industry. They are an interactive role-playing experience where players assume fictional characters 一usually the role of an investigator一 and work together to solve a murder.

This rising trend gathers players around the table to work together, analyse clues and solve the most elaborate and interesting crimes and mysteries.

Murder Mystery: A Rising Trend In Board Game Industry

The murder mystery and true-crime-themed games market has grown substantially, especially during and after the pandemic, often tied to the broader cultural popularity of true-crime content such as podcasts and documentaries. It is also the product of diversification. Creators and designers are creating a wider variety of board game experiences, from detective puzzles to narrative-driven kits where players piece together evidence over multiple sessions.

According to the Murder Mystery Games Market Report of 2026, carried out by The Business Research Company, the Murder Mystery Games market reached $2.02 billion in 2025, and it is expected to grow up to $3.58 billion in 2030 at a compound annual growth rate of 12.1%.

Murder Mystery Board Game Mechanics

Murder Mystery games come in a vast range of shapes and mechanics. From cooperative storytelling to escape-room-style mystery boxes. Some have all the classic elements of a board game (a board, tokens, cards, dice, etc.), some are more abstract, or rely heavily on player interaction, taking notes, and using their imagination.  However, there are some game mechanics present in most of them:

  • The use of logic and deduction: Players must analyse clues, identify patterns and hidden information, rule out the possibilities and narrow down suspects. The players take the roles of investigators, interpreting hints and acting out their roles.
  • Time challenges and puzzles: A mechanic not necessarily followed by all murder mystery board games. These include games and challenges that add countdowns or complex puzzles to heighten suspense and engagement.
  • Clue gathering and analysis: Collecting information from cards, boards, or scenario and character descriptions to piece together a recreation of the crime. Information, sometimes, hidden in details across the game that the investigators must identify and take into account for a plausible hypothesis.
  • Communication and information sharing:  These cooperative murder mystery board games rely on communication. Players must  share their views and interpretations among other players to collaboratively solve the mystery.

Replayability through Legacy and Similar Experiences

Playability in murder mystery games is often limited due to their story-driven, single-use nature. Once players have solved the mystery, the narrative is fully  revealed, leaving little opportunity to experience the game again in the same way.  Unlike more open-ended or modular games, these titles typically lack flexibility for multiple playthroughs. This makes them primarily one-time experiences unless designed as a legacy-style game with branching paths or evolving content.

An example of a legacy-style murder mystery board game is Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective. Where players can explore multiple interconnected cases, allowing for varied experiences and partial replayability across different scenarios.

Murder Mystery Games for the most-skilled players

For this selection of Murder Mystery board games, we have listed cooperative board games that offer a true sensation of solving a crime. This excludes those board games where one of the players is secretly or knowingly the criminal or the victim.

A fully cooperative and narrative driven investigation game set in a contemporary setting. This murder mystery board game is supported by a website used a database where players can find additional information. Players take on the roles of professional investigators working for a modern law-enforcement agency, Antares.

This board game contains some elements of other classic board games, such as a board and tokens, and blends them with elements unique to murder mystery board games, such as case decks and books.

To set up the game and investigate the case:

  1. Place the board on the table and place the investigation marker on the headquarters location.
  2. Place the time marker on the 8:00 am space time track and the day marker on day 1.
  3. Each investigator chooses a player investigator card and turns any unused investigator tiles to the consultant side. Collect tokens depicted on those tiles.
  4. Log into the Antares website and choose a case to work on. Open the case book and read the introduction and specific rules for that case.

This board game works around a timed challenge. Each day is divided into eight working hours, and the players have seven days to solve the case.

MicroMacro: Crime City

👤Players: 1-4

🕑Duration: 45 min

🤝Cooperative

A cooperative deduction and investigation game in which players act as detectives in Crime City. One of the players take the role of lead investigator and they are responsible for reading the text on the cards.

This Murder Mystery game relies on visual deduction, logical reasoning, and teamwork. Like other Murder mystery games, this game does not have a board, but a map to investigate the city. All cases are organised from least to most difficult to solve and include an introductory case to learn the rules while playing.

Each case is organised in a deck of cards, and the top card of the deck describes the first task the players must solve on a black background. The solutions to each of the tasks are always on the map. If the solution is correct, the team lead is allowed to read the text on the back of the card and show the illustration to the players. However, if the solution is wrong, the lead investigator immediately puts the card back without reading the card text.

MicroMacro: Crime City is a good introductory game to this trend, as it is highly visual and easy to learn.

Chronicles of Crime

👤Players: 1-4

🕑Duration: 90 min

🤝Cooperative

An app-driven, murder mystery board game, in which the players take the role of a team of forensic experts in the city of London, sent out to crack the unsolvable cases. This game reintroduces the element of an evidence board, which players  will use to gather evidence, sort locations, and investigate characters. This murder mystery combines a physical element with the companion app, which provides dialogue, forensic analysis and case progression.

To progress in an investigation, the players have to scan a location card to move to that specific location or scan a character card to interrogate them. Evidence cards give the team clues about the case and forensic contacts allow them to call a contact for further information.

In Chronicles of Time the app companion shows the current time on the top right of the screen, so the quicker the players solve the case, the better the score they earn.
