The island of Catan might be the most known fictional island of the world. Players of all ages 一 from complete newcomers to experienced gamers 一 have played, and continue to play, this iconic game.

A game that offers a different play each time.  Its modular board and the negotiation mechanics makes Catan a social experience that brings friends and families together.

Why Everyone has heard of CATAN

Since its first release in 1995, Catan has created a new landscape for modern board gaming. Created in Germany by Klaus Teuber, it set it apart from traditional board games. The board game’s accessibility is a key reason for its universal appeal.

Catan has established itself as a game for everyone. The rules, simple enough for beginners, children and families, its module board and layers of strategy keep players engaged. Every game is a different adventure, easy to learn and with multiple paths for victory. Negotiation, trading and planning sets the mood for interaction, collaboration and friendly rivalry. For almost more than thirty years, Catan has cemented its status as one of the most recognised and played board games in the world

What makes CATAN Special: A Game Play Overview

👥 Players: 3 – 4

🕑 Duration: 60 – 90 min

⚔️ Competitive

Objective

To achieve victory, the player must be the first to reach 10 victory points. These points can be earned by building roads and settlements and expanding these into cities. However, this is not the only mechanic to earn points. Trading resources, buying and collecting development cards can also give points to the players.

The player starts as a settler in the island of Catan with two roads and two settlements. Collecting resources and using these to build and expand their network, to collect more resources.

Players can earn points by:

  • Building settlements (1 point each)
  • Evolving settlements into cities (2 points each)
  • Achieving the Longest road or the Largest army (2 points each)
  • Victory point development cards (1 point each)

Catan’s success relies on how players balance their strategy, manage their resources and negotiate between each other.

Core Mechanics

Social interaction as a game mechanic

Including social interaction as a game mechanic makes Catan a different game every play. Unlike other board games in which players work and progress in isolation, settlers (players) need to communicate and negotiate with each other to get the resources they need or even secure the place for a future settlement.

This importance on human interaction makes Catan not just a game of points, but an experience of connection and clever conversation.

Simple play, yet strategic

Catan’s balance between simple rules and deep strategy is simply elegant. Easy to learn and understand, yet heavy in decision-making and its consequences throughout the game. Every move and decision matters, from the prioritisation of certain types of resources, to where the player places their settlements.

Catan proves that a great game does not necessarily need complicated mechanics, scenarios or rules. Keeping players coming back for more to test new ways to win and outthink their friends in a new game.

High replayability

The board game’s hexagonal and modular board design guarantees a different adventure and a different island of Catan for every session. Even the placement of the numbered tokens that determines resource production on each tile, changes and completely reshapes the strategic possibilities.

The variety of the board’s  layout ensures that players continue to find fresh challenges long after their first play.

Expand the adventure: CATAN expansions you need to try

Expansions are perfect for players that crave something new, the perfect challenge to deepen and diversify the gameplay. Catan offers their players new scenarios and new strategies with each expansion.

These add-ons invite the experienced players to live a new adventure in a way they never imagined.

CATAN: 5-6 Player Extension

For those friend groups that need a 5-6 player extension to play catan all together.  While the core of Catan, its mechanics and rules stay the same, this expansion allows more people to join the fun.

This expansion includes extra terrain tiles, building pieces and resource cards, to expand the island and ensure that everyone has space to settle.

❗However, this extension of the original game added on its first edition a new “building phase” between turns. During this, players can build roads, settlements or expand these last ones into cities. This rule was changed in the 2021 edition and replaced by the paired players turn rule.

According to this rule, there are always two players participating during a turn:

  • To determine the starting player, everyone takes turns to roll both dice.
  • The highest roll takes the “Catanian 1” token and the third player to the left takes the “Catanian 2” token.
  • On their turn Catanian 1 proceeds as usual.
  • During their turn, Catanian 2 is not allowed to: roll for production again at the beginning of their turn, trade with other players, play a development card before Catanian 1’s production roll.

CATAN: Seafarers

Seafarers expansion turns the island of Catan into an archipelago. This popular add-on introduces ships, exploration and new islands to discover.  The game includes several water tiles and more resource tiles that change the way the board is set up.

This expansion introduces the use of ports that give players powerful trading advantages. Instead of relying solely on trades with other players, they can use ports to exchange resources at better rates.

  • General ports allow trades at a 3:1 ratio.
  • Spacialised ports let the player two of a kind of resource for one of any other resource.

Catan: Seafarers also adds the pirate ship for a new layer of tension and interaction. It functions much like the robber from the base game. The pirate ship can be moved  whenever a player rolls a 7 or plays a knight card. However, instead of blocking resources, the pirate ships block sea routes, shipping lanes and steal from ships or settlements.

CATAN: Hawaii (Scenario expansion)

Designed as a special scenario for the Seafarers expansion. Players explore and settle in a pacific-style archipelago made up of several islands. The Hawaii map also brings a new aesthetic and thematic feel to the game.  But the limited land, resources and the constant need to balance expansion with efficiency, makes every decision crucial for the player’s victory.

CATAN: Traders & Barbarians

Rather than introducing a new mechanic, Traders & Barbarian offers five different scenarios. One main scenario and three small variants, allowing players to tailor the game to their preferences.

In the main scenario, Catan has endured an invasion and players need to rebuild. Acting as merchants, transporting goods to rebuild settlements while barbarians roam the land, disrupting trade routes.

Beyond the central scenario, this expansion offers other smaller scenarios:

  • The Fishermen of Catan: introduces fish as a new resource.
  • The Rivers of Catan: adds gold and river-based rewards.
  • The Nomads: that introduces camels as trade routes, built by the players instead of roads.

CATAN: Explorers & Pirates

This expansion introduces the element of surprise. As players must build ships and set them into uncharted waters. The board game starts with only part of the map revealed and the players will reveal the hex tiles as they explore the map.

  • Pirate ships can block sea routes and steal from vessels.
  • Fish tokens and gold are introduced as tradeable goods.
  • Players can earn victory points through missions like: discover new islands, defeat the pirates and fish for Catan.

The undiscovered islands can hold resources, fishing grounds and pirate lairs. This new mechanic is what sets this expansion apart from the classic game. The players will earn victory points through missions.

CATAN: Cities and Knights

In this expansion, the new mechanics focus on the development and defences of the cities, creating a more dynamic and challenging experience for veteran settlers.

Players can produce commodities that can be used to improve their cities in three key areas: Trade, politics and science. This add-on takes Catan to a new level of strategy:

  • City upgrades transform settlements into cities that produce  paper, cloth and coin, essential for advancing civilization.
  • Recruiting and deploying knights to protect the island from barbarian invasion.
  • Barbarian attacks, during which players must work together (or not) to defend the settlements.
  • City improvements, investing commodities into trade, politics and science to unlock benefits and powerful progress cards.

This add-on is perfect for experienced players that crave a deeper and more tactical challenge. An immersive experience  of growth, conflict and clever strategy.
