A rising trend is making its way into the video game industry, carving out its own territory. Cozy, or cosy, video games offer a relaxing and entertaining alternative for casual gamers who want their own space, a warm drink, and to curl up in bed while exploring new worlds and collecting rewards.
Video games serve many purposes. They promote teamwork and communication while helping to prevent isolation. They also develop strategic and logical thinking through their mechanics, missions, and character progression. Moreover, video games offer an escape一 a space to unwind and relax.
⚠️Disclaimer: For this article, we’ll use the term “cozy”, as it is the most-used and widely adopted for this category.
What are Cozy games and how to identify them
Cozy games are, more often than a specific genre, a feeling experienced by the player. Games like No Man’s Sky or Minecraft can feel cozy if the player chooses not to follow the main storyline and instead focuses on the sandbox aspects of the game. These are the kinds of games players return to when they don’t want competition, pressure or high stakes. They just want to feel comfortable.

These titles are less about winning, and more about unwinding. As more players began seeking that sense of calm and familiarity, the industry responded. What started as a player’s behaviour slowly shaped a clear trend and from that trend a new category emerged.
Non-violent environments, a Defining Feature
Instead of danger or survival, cozy games prioritize safety, calm and creativity. Players are free to explore, build, farm, and craft. A non-violent design that minimises conflict and replaces it with nurturing mechanics. These environments feel safe and welcoming to players, making these games widely approachable.
In cozy games, players get to experience a set of skills and activities that would not be really meaningful in other videogames, or even expensive or impossible in the real world. Cozy games create spaces for higher-order needs like mastery, self-reflection and connectedness. These games give the player a space to deal with emotional and social maintenance and growth. Without high stress, immediate threats or survival scenarios, players can focus their attention on more soothing tasks.
Not all that Glitters Is Farming
There is a widespread misconception that cozy games are all about farming. Much of this originates from titles that popularised this video game category, such as Stardew Valley, or Animal Crossing. However, Farming is not the only expression of a cozy design.
Coziness is, above all, about aesthetics. While soft aesthetics have been marketed for children’s games, cozy sensory elements can be just as powerful for adults. These are not limited to soft colours and shapes, but also include:
- Abundance: Visually signaling plenty, whether through overflowing tables of food and drink, warm lighting, textiles, or gentle social spaces. Cozy environments frequently embrace this design language, especially in settings like taverns, kitchens, cafés, and bedrooms, where warmth and fullness subtly communicate safety and rest.
- Smooth transitions: Gentle transitions, between areas and scenarios, that help maintain the sense of calm and continuity.
- Player protection and support: Small details can reassure the player’s security, a guardian figure, calm NPCs, or even a sleeping animal. When a space feels stable and predictable, it becomes knowable and therefore comforting. A familiar setting will be cozier to the player than an unfamiliar one.
- Player centric: Cozy games offer a space designed at a scale that feels natural and accommodating to the user. The proportions of objects, architecture and even surrounding creatures reinforce a sense of belonging. When elements are excessively small or large it disrupts the balance. A cozy game is welcoming, without burdening the player with heroic responsibility or urgent tasks. They may join communal activities or choose solitude without pressure.
A Rising Trend, Explained in Numbers
The GamersDiscoverCo newsletter for February 2026 explained it perfectly. There has been an increase in video games that are categorised as “cozy”, from 0.4% in 2022, to 3.1% in 2025. This growth has also driven the development of cozy games; however, part of it is in response to the positive audience reaction to the cozy category.
Moreover, Steam currently hosts a catalogue of 1,596 cozy games rising in gamer participants everyday. During last year alone (2025), cozy video game releases almost doubled in number on Steam, reaching roughly 1% of the platform’s entire catalogue.
From a demographic perspective, according to analytics firm Brandwatch, 55% of the online conversations about cozy games come from female users. In contrast, women account for only 25% of general gaming discussions.
The industry is no longer treating this as a mere “trend”. Cozy Games are reaching players who have historically been overlooked by the industry, reshaping not only how video games are made, but who they are made for.
Two of the most-recognisable cozy video games are:
Animal Crossing: New Horizons

A life simulation in which players move to a deserted island and gradually develop it into a thriving community by gathering resources, crafting items, designing spaces and interacting with animal villagers. Players can engage in a variety of activities such as: bug catching, crafting furniture, fishing, gardening, and decorating their own in-game home.
The game supports multiplayer interaction, allowing friends to visit each other’s islands, exchange items and share social events. Animal Crossing: New Horizons emphasises low-pressure, open-ended gameplay, creativity and social connection. Its charming aesthetics and community focus has turned this video game into a cultural phenomenon, widely discussed in gaming communities.
Stardew Valley

The player inherits a neglected farm and must work to restore it by playing crops, raising animals, mining, fishing, crafting, and building relationships with the town’s NPCs. This farming simulator emphasizes player choice, low-pressure progression, and sense of routine. Players don’t face forced deadlines or fail states, the game allows them to structure their day and goals as they wish.
Stardewvalley combines farming, creative freedom, exploration and narrative depth. A long-form gameplay in which players can form friendships, pursue romances, and even start a family, giving a sense of community and emotional connection.
The necessity of a Cozy, Soft, and Safe Space
Cozy games are not just a trend; it is a new category that has come to stay. The nature of a cozy game impacts a broader audience, attracting even non-gamers. In a time where story lines are marked by a deepening division, fear-driven narratives, and constant urgency, cozy video games can be understood as a quiet yet powerful alternative to contemporary culture.
