The best part? No one will judge you when you talk to yourself dramatically in the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at how to become a solo RPG adventurer in just a few simple steps. Grab your dice, your favorite notebook, and your inner thespian. It&#8217;s time to embark on a quest where you can\u2019t argue with the GM&#8230; because you <em>are<\/em> the GM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Choose a System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like choosing a wand in <em>Harry Potter<\/em>, or a flavor at an ice cream shop that has 200 options (why?), picking the right RPG system for solo play is the first critical step. Otherwise, you&#8217;re going to spend a lot of time playing &#8220;Guess What the Dungeon Master is Thinking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you\u2019ve always wanted to live out your grim, Viking-inspired survivalist fantasy, <em>Ironsworn<\/em> is your jam. But if you\u2019d rather take your favorite system (<em>cough<\/em> D&amp;D 5e <em>cough<\/em>) and Frankenstein it into a solo experience, then the Mythic GME will be your duct tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Get Comfortable with the Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve chosen your system, it\u2019s time to do the thing every tabletop gamer does <em>after<\/em> their first three sessions: read the rulebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn Enough to Start, Not Everything<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to know every single rule. You ask, \u201cDoes the client seem nervous?\u201d Roll the dice. The answer: \u201cYes.\u201d You roll on the event table and get \u201cDeceive \/ Power.\u201d Suddenly, she\u2019s not just nervous\u2014she\u2019s lying to you because she\u2019s being blackmailed by the mayor! Boom. Instant plot twist. And you only just opened your trench coat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pro tip:<\/strong> Make a cheat sheet for reference during play. Include your key mechanics, common oracles, and your character sheet all on one page. Efficiency + immersion = success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Set the Scene and Start Small<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to plan an epic ten-part campaign right away. You also don&#8217;t need to detail a massive world filled with characters before the first session. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, start small. Think of a situation, a location, and maybe one or two NPCs. The rest will develop as you play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use prompts like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWhat does my character want?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhere does the adventure begin?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhat problem or mystery is happening right now?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Then ask a few yes\/no questions, roll some dice, and see where the rabbit hole leads. Ask: \u201cIs the ship powered?\u201d Roll: No. \u201cAre there life signs?\u201d Roll: Yes. Cue creepy synth music. Congratulations, you\u2019ve just written the beginning of your sci-fi horror campaign and possibly wet your pants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Record Everything (But Not Like a Court Reporter)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Solo RPGs are often part game, part journal. Whether you\u2019re using a fancy leather-bound tome, or a Google Doc named &#8220;DO NOT DELETE AGAIN,&#8221; you should keep a record of what happens. This not only helps you stay immersed, but also keeps internal consistency. when you catch up with the Orc that stole your lunch money five sessions later, will you remember if his name was Waagh, Maagh or Gaagh? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good journal also stands as a record of your great deeds and lets you look back on your story with awe, horror, and a slight cringe at your character&#8217;s fashion choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do Record:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Major events<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Character choices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Character and place names<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plot twists and discoveries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Questions you asked and results you got<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Feel free to write in first person (\u201cI crept through the crypt&#8230;\u201d) or third person (\u201cThe rogue crept through the crypt&#8230;\u201d). Or mix it up! Nobody&#8217;s grading this. It&#8217;s just for your eyes only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For Example:<\/strong> After a few sessions, you might have a gritty narrative like:<br><em>&#8220;Day 3. I ran out of water and was forced to drink from the radiated stream. My left eyebrow is now sentient. I\u2019ve named it Bernard.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Let Go of Control (Embrace the Chaos)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a group game, the chaos comes from other players and the dice, with the GM trying to hold the fabric of reality together with duct tape and expletives. In a solo RPGs, it all comes from you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more willing you are to let randomness and prompts lead the story somewhere unexpected, the more fun you will have, and the more alive your campaign will feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like being a good GM for other players, don&#8217;t try to control everything.
