Back in the first half of the 2010s, the rise of virtual reality as a tool and a new experience for gaming opened a new world for gamers. VR gaming meant a new way to experience video games. A more immersive and accessible ecosystem in which gamers could experience their favourite adventures almost if it was real-life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Meta announced their Metaverse new platform as a Virtual reality world that would exist as a VR, chat, office and for VR gaming. More than a decade later, Zuckerberg announced the permanent discontinuation to the support of this virtual world on its own Quest Headsets by June 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the current state of virtual reality and VR gaming?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Metaverse Dream<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To explain this properly we need to travel back in time to 2014. Facebook had just acquired Oculus VR for approximately $2 million, and Mark Zuckerberg positioned VR as the next major computing platform after mobile. The centre remained on gaming and communication, with VR still largely experimental, niche, and driven primarily by developers, rather than the mainstream consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch of consumer headsets such as Rift and the Quest Line followed. Then a major shift towards standalone VR devices that no longer require a PC and significant investment in Reality Labs. By 2020, meta platforms had established a dominant position in the VR hardware market through its ecosystem. By this time, the focus was on building the underlying infrastructure of the metaverse rather than promoting a sweeping virtual future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, Facebook rebranded as Meta and declared itself as the \u201cmetaverse company\u201d. However, the idea of a metaverse is still a poorly defined concept, unclear whether it referred to virtual offices, VR chats, or an entire redefinition of the Internet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 2022 onwards, the gap between the vision on VR and the reality became incredibly visible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pushed Out Of The Main Focus <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The focus of big companies switched towards a more immediate and commercial technology, artificial intelligence being one of them. During the following years, the idea of the metaverse was a large amount of overlapped ideas, such as gaming, productivity applied tools, and social spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the metaverse was still presented as a controlled ecosystem shaped largely by Meta Platforms.<\/a> This created tension between Meta\u2019s vision of a potential future digital society and the reality of a centralised system. As meta retained full control over features it conflicted with the idea of an open shared digital future. The Metaverse did not lose the focus of the public interest because of the technological limitations of VR, but because the vision was too closeted to the Meta company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With prices that can run into the thousands for some models. The first major obstacle for virtual reality is the cost of the headsets. While some brands have lowered the entry barrier by developing more affordable options, other high-end systems still require significant investment. In addition, in the case of PCVR, it also requires a powerful pc to host the game and the virtual reality set up. The pricing of the headsets, limits the user percentage, especially among casual gamers who may be reluctant to spend these amounts in a new gaming system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experience issues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Developers’ ability to address uncomfortable situations experienced by players while using VR is limited. Largely because these issues affect only a relatively small portion of the overall user base. As a result, mitigating problems such as gamer fatigue and motion sickness is not always prioritised. These challenges make it difficult to sustain long or frequent play sessions, limiting user retention and slowing the growth of a consistent user base.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because VR still occupies a relatively niche market, investors and companies are often cautious about committing to significant and long-term investment. This has resulted in slow innovation and instability among development studios. This financial uncertainty has resulted in scaled back projects, or even cancelled. For example: Meta announced last month the shutting down of Horizon worlds<\/a>, the company\u2019s virtual reality social network. Meta has decided to scale down the metaverse focus and redirect its attention to artificial intelligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Tool or a Standalone Game Sector?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When talking about VR gaming, there are two gaming systems that usually get mixed up, PCVR and Standalone VR. These two systems, although similar, have significant differences between them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

PCVR (PC games using Virtual Reality)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This VR gaming system includes a video game running on a gaming PC and the use of a headset as a tracking device. Platforms like Steam Vr or Oculus PC app are two of the most used platforms for this gaming system. This permits the games to show\u00a0deeper and more flexible physics systems, and higher-end graphics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some forums and reddit discussions defend that PCVR is stuck in 2016 technology and has not offered any innovative updates in VR gaming. On the other hand, PCVR is defined by other users as a smoother way to experience a game, and offers a larger catalogue with mods, and indie games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standalon is a VR gaming system that refers to all-in-one headsets where games run directly from the VR devices and does not require PC activity. This gaming system gained popularity after the release of the Meta Quest system, among others. These systems have the content distributed in their own stores and markets such as Meta Quest Store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among its pros, or advantages, it is a wireless and relatively affordable experience. However, Standalone VR gaming typically features a lower graphical fidelity and simple environments compared to PCVR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arizona Sunshine<\/a> is an example of a standalone VR game. A first-person shooter designed specifically for standalone VR gaming. Players must focus on survival against zombie hordes in the Southwest of the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VR Gaming Will Continue To Exist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

VR gaming will continue to grow thanks to new tools such as artificial intelligence and recent advances in graphics quality and motion tracking. It may not be rapid or aggressive growth, and the focus may shift to other tools along the way. But these video games will continue to exist and capture the interest of players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
