VGJ.Thunder 3:0 victory on Evil Geniuses in grand final may look like a crushing defeat, but the series were full of highly skilled plays from both teams.
The Galaxy Battles II: Emerging Worlds were spent in Manila, Philipinnes. At the beginning it had a Major Championship status from Valve, but before tournament starts Valve recalled a Major status and thats why prize pool was only 500.000 USD instead of 1.000.000 USD and teams didn’t earn any Dota Pro Circuit points which required to get invited to The International 8. It happened after Galaxy Battles 2 organizers announced that every player who will participate in this event had to get a license from Philippinnes department of sports and recreation.
After losing a major-status a lot of tier 1 teams like Team Liquid, Team Secret, Virtus.pro, Mineski, LGD FY, Newbee, Team Kinguin, Team Empire said that they will not take a part in this event and Team OG went with 2 substitutions (Sebastian “7uckingmad” Debbs – coach of OG and Moritz “KheZu” Guitman – former Team Secret player instead of Johan “n0tail” Sundstein and Gustav “s4” Magnusson) . It was a disappointment for a lot of fans from whole world and and especially for Philippino fans who famous for their unbelievable cheering and loudly support for every e-sport stuff in their country.
Lack of tier 1 teams were a chance for underdogs to show themselves in action. And they did. Despite of most of them were eliminated in first few rounds of play-offs, CIS squad Team Spirit made they run to the 3rd place. They defeated a famous philipines team TNC Pro Team with their superexperienced Canadian captain Sivatheeban "1437" Sivanathapillai 2:0. After that they got eliminated to lower bracket by VGJ.Thunder (Vici Gaming Jeremy Thunder) 2:1, but they didn’t give up and won their matches against brazilians paiN Gaming and 4 times major winner Team OG. In lower bracket finals they again face VGJ.Thunder and got crushed 0:2. VG.J Thunder had a very hard road to the Grand finals, after they face Evil Geniuses in upper bracket finals but were knocked to the lower bracket in a 2:0 loss. In lower bracket finals they smashed Team Spirit and readied themselves for a rematch against EG.
Series opened with a 29 minute, 27:5 stomp from a VGJ.Thunder. It looks like EG underestimated their opponents after 2:0 victory in upper bracket. The things really kicked off in game 2. Teams were fighting almost 73 minutes and everything was nearly even in terms of net worth, towers taken and kills. Game 3 were close and full of beautiful teamfights but in the end VGJ.Thunder player Liu "Sylar" Jiajun bought a rapier on medusa and ended series pretty easy. The Chinese squad got a Galaxy Battles II trophy, 500.000 USD but unfortunately didn’t get any Dota Pro Circuit Points.
