Yesterday, June the 12th, the Fortnite Pro-AM tournament took place at the E3 convention. The prize pool for this competition was 1 Million USD that will be redistributed to any charities the winners want to. The favorite team was composed of Tyler « Ninja » Blevins and Christofer « Marshmellow » Comstock, a music producer.
the tournament went as planed, Ninja and Marshmellow won, even though they had a few difficulties in the early games.
I’m not writing this article to talk about what occurred in the competition so let’s cut to the chase. During the tournament Epic Games revealed a Fortnite World Cup! This announce comes less than a month after they declared their will to offer 100 Million USD in prize pools during 2019.
Everybody in the esports world was waiting for them to announce their big plan. In case you forgot, it’s the first time such an amount of money is promised as prize pools for only a year. Therefore, there were many speculations in what kind of competition they could do. I personally think a World Cup is a good choice and I can’t wait to get more details.
Here’s Epics blog post:
« We’ll be supporting community organized events, online events, and major organized competitions all over the world, where anyone can participate, and anyone can win. Fortnite World Cup Qualifiers begin in Fall 2018, and culminate in the first Fortnite World Cup in late 2019. What about the specifics? The $100,000,000 will be split between many events at different levels of competition around the globe. Fortnite World Cup play will focus on Solos and Duos, but there’ll be plenty of opportunities to squad-up in competition, too.
This is for you, the players. Qualifications for the Fortnite World Cup will be based on merit. Epic will not be selling teams or franchises, and won’t allow third-party leagues to do so either.
